An inmate matching the description of the rapper Lil Wayne was listed on the Web site of the New York City Department of Corrections as being discharged on Thursday, and an operator at the department's telephone service said the inmate was released.
Lil Wayne, Whose given name is Dwayne Carter Jr.., Has served eight months of a one-year sentence at Rikers Island jail, having pleaded guilty to attempted possession of a weapon after a gun was found on his tour bus in 2007.
MTV News initially reported that Lil Wayne, who was scheduled for release on Tuesday, would remain in jail one extra day because of a miscalculation. But in a later posting, MTV News said Lil Wayne was released, citing a spokesperson for Rikers Island.
Just before noon on Thursday, a message on Lil Wayne's Twitter account - where posts had been signed with the hashtag # freeweezy - appeared, bearing only the hashtag # welcomehomeweezy.
