Nigerian First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan said that Nigerian women will miss the contributions of the late Maryam Babangida, whose support and guidance would have helped enormously in advocating for greater participation in elected positions in the country.



Dr. Jonathan made the comment Thursday in Minna the girl Maryam Babangida International Dialogue on African women, she argued that women should be able to contribute significantly to the development of Nigeria.


She said that women are significantly underrepresented in politics, arguing that only 8.3 percent are in political positions in the country, a situation she said was corrected by the late wife of former military president , General Ibrahim Babangida Badamasi.



"It is a known fact that I miss so much my mother Maryam Babangida it's time she showed me the way. She is the person who started making Nigerian women get the best in life.






"She is the one who dragged us from our villages to international lime light and if alive today she would have helped in giving us the best advice to follow and would have made the task much easier and better," said it.


She called on governors and political leaders in Nigeria for the implementation of 35 per cent women's participation in political circles in Nigeria, adding that only this will ensure balance and progress in the country. "Said Mrs. Jonathan






The governor of Niger State, Dr. Babangida Aliyu Muazu, said earlier that until Nigeria imbibe the culture to allow women to take leadership position that the country will continue to miss their qualities proactive leadership.


Aliyu said that women are more reliable in terms of probity and accountability in relation to male people adding that countries with better economies have adequate representation of women in all sectors of the economy.


She lamented the fact that Maryam has passed and intelligent contribution to the progress of women folk lacked adding that she needs help to take the Nigerian woman to greater heights.
