Police restrict moving

Police said yesterday the movement of persons would be restricted from today's and tomorrow's elections postponed the National Assembly.

Force spokesman Olusola Amore, in the statement in Abuja, said the restriction is to allow security agencies "to monitor the activities of miscreants, thugs and other criminal elements who may intend to use the cover of darkness to interrupt the smooth running of elections. "

The statement reads in part: "The Nigeria Police wishes to inform the public that the restriction of movement in the election Saturday, April 9, will remain in effect until after the election.

"Movement is restricted to 22 hours from Friday, April 9 at 6:00 on Saturday, April 9. There will be restriction of movement of people 8:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 9, in the areas of voting and centers.

"This restraining order is to allow law enforcement officers to monitor the activities of miscreants, thugs and other criminal elements who may intend to use the cover of darkness to interrupt the smooth conduct of elections.

"Meanwhile, people on the essential duties of INEC officials are exempt from that restriction, because they will be properly identified with their ID cards.

"Police will not tolerate any act or conduct that is prejudicial to the conduct of the election, like any troublemakers will be arrested and dealt with according to law.

"The Nigeria Police is using this medium to assure Nigerians that the police are working together to ensure violence-free elections and fair."
