Why nap is essential for babies
Researchers shed light on the role of sleep in
the first year of life, which remained unknown to scientists until now.
Sleeping is part of the baby daily. Yet the role of sleep in the first year of life remains unknown to scientists. But according to a study published in PNAS , napping infant is far from trivial: it would allow them to better assimilate what he has learned.
More than 30 minutes Sleep helps to remember
LEARNING. The study, conducted by British and German researchers, was conducted among 216 healthy babies, ages 6 to 12 months. Scientists have shown to all infants three new actions: for example, how to remove and replace a mitten on a puppet. Then half of them slept in 4 hours of the learning session. The others slept less than 30 minutes or did not sleep at all during this time.
The next day the researchers encouraged the babies perform one of three gestures learned the day before. They then realized that only the baby s who slept more than 30 minutes after the learning session the day perfectly remembered gestures (on average, they remembered a task and a half). Conversely, other infants had stored any gesture.
